Over the summer, I read Spelled. It is a good twist on the classic Wizard of Oz. I thought the book was an inventive way to retell the tale of Dorothy. Schow changed Dorothy's name to Dorothea in her tale. Dorothea tries to fix her problem on a (cursed) star and it backfires, leaving the kingdom in chaos an her parents stuck in Kansas. Now, Dorothea has to undo the curse before it releases the wickedest witch of all and the spell to end her world.
Have you ever been in a similar situation as Dorothea? Have you ever tried fixing a problem and it ended up worse than the original problem? How did you solve the problem then? Were you able to work it out?
I know I can relate to Dorothea. When I was younger, my mother told me not to chew gum while in bed. One night, I sneaked a piece of gum and was chewing it while laying in my bed. I do not remember how it happened, but the gum fell out of my mouth and into my hair. I tried to cover it up by simply cutting the gum out, but then my hair was a bit funky looking. My mother noticed and then had my hair cut short to even it out and not have a super crazy hairstyle. It was okay, but not my favorite time when growing up. I survived and grew my hair back out. Though, I learned my lesson.
As with Dorothea in this book, she learns some important lessons on her journey to fix what has went wrong. Along her journey she changes. I do not want to give away anything else about the book. So, if you are interested in how she changes and what happens in the book, I encourage you to read it! Also, I challenge you to compare it to other books you have read. Are there similar books you have read with this type of situation? How did those characters' respond? Would Dorothea and that character be friends? How are Dorothea and that character's decisions similar and/or different?
I encourage you to respond and share your thoughts on the book, similar situation, or books you feel would be of interest to someone who enjoys this book.
